Are you from around here?
Yes, I'm Hastings born and bred and I've never lived anywhere else. This town runs through me like a stick of rock! It's a great place to live and I'm pleased that so many agree with me and are now choosing to come to Hastings and play a part in our future. If there's a downside to being a local, it's that many of my older constituents still remember me when I was a small boy – so I'll never be allowed to get "too big for my boots"!
Best thing about Hastings?
It's got to be the people. You'll never find a more welcoming and friendly community. There's a real spirit of public service in the town and we have so many "unsung heroes" who give their free time to help others.
Worst thing about Hastings?
Like all seaside towns we faced a spiral of economic decline during the post war years and that brought social problems in its wake. Over the past ten years, thanks to Government regeneration funding, things are getting better but there are still too many families struggling with the challenges of poor housing, low wages and lack of opportunity.
Favourite local pub?
The Filo in the High Street has a great atmosphere and a vast choice of local "real ales" as does the White Rock Hotel. The Havelock is also great - and I can't fail to mention the Hollington Oak as I live next door!
Favourite local restaurant?
There's such a choice. I really love a good curry and whilst all our curry restaurants are excellent, it takes a lot to beat "Tandoori Ghor" on Grand Parade. For pasta dishes it simply has to be "Mon Forte" at Eversfield Place.

Fish and chips?
We've got the largest surviving beach launched fishing fleet in Europe and our fishermen make sure that Hastings fish and chips can't be beaten.
Favourite local place for a walk?
My wife Rosemary and I like to get out into the countryside around the town when we can. I also love the peace and quiet of Hollington Church in the Wood which is right on our doorstep.
Favourite local landmark?
That must be the view from the West Hill looking out over the town - a view I remember from my childhood. So much has changed since then but the view is as lovely as ever.
What's the regeneration doing for Hastings?
We've seen unemployment halved, transport links improved (and set to improve still further with the planned Link Road), improved opportunities for education and training through the new University Centre. Still to come will be the revitalisation of the Ore Valley with affordable "eco" housing, investment in Ore train station and part of the new College buildings.
What's top of your agenda at the moment? Fighting to keep a full consultant led maternity service at the local Conquest hospital.
If you could do one thing for Hastings?
I'd like to see all our youngsters getting the help and support they need to fulfil their potential. The record £95m investment in providing an iconic new College on the Station Plaza site, is a step towards achieving that dream.
