Locals Who Launch
Passionate about Food

Peggy is passionate about food. “At the age of nine,
I taught myself to bake because I wanted to eat cake everyday!” she laughs.

Having sampled Peggy’s cooking several times, I can vouch that the practice was worth it. Taste her carrot cupcakes with cream-cheese icing and I defy you not to agree with Helena Ashton of Seaspace: “The best carrot cake I’ve ever had - better than Jamie Oliver’s.”

In Cape Town, where she grew up, Peggy catered for parties at university, and has been catering in her spare time ever since. So how did Peggy get from sunny South Africa to, er, sunny Sussex? “I just love everything about England. The idea for Love Sussex came one summer that I spent living in Alfriston, and loved it! No one told me how beautiful Sussex is, that there are so many delicious local food producers.” Love Sussex provides a diverse catering service, from cakes through party-fare and wedding banquets to a mobile restaurant. Menus are always seasonal, so all you have to do is give Peggy your budget, any special requirements, and she’ll come up with suggestions. Vegetarian is a speciality but meat’s always an option, especially local game. This summer, Peggy will be setting up her restaurant in a variety of beautiful places to serve brunch, lunch and tea in an apple orchard at Ringden Farm, a bluebell wood and possibly Camber Castle.

Peggy’s delicious cakes are a great asset to any café - worth considering if you want customers coming back for more. She uses local free-range eggs, organic sugar and flour and bakes and delivers fresh three times a week (“always fresh and always different”). Delivery area includes Hastings, St Leonards, Bexhill, Battle and Rye. A large choice includes Devil’s Food Cake, Lemon Poppyseed Bundt Cake, Carrot Cake and Hummingbird Cake (banana and pineapple). A 7-inch cake retails at £15 serving 8-10 hungry people and a 9-inch at £20, 14-16. They’re perfect for cafes, delis, tearooms, restaurants, tourist attractions, business meetings or company training. You can even buy vouchers as a gift. And look out for Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed special!

“From field to fork, the food we serve has been produced by people with passion.”
