Locals Who Launch

A couple of years ago, when Spike was new to St Leonards, she went for lunch at St Clements just at the top of Norman Road, did a bit of shopping, and came to a conclusion: “This is where I want to be.”

On a lovely sunny day, she wandered down the road and stopped at the café where her hers is now situated. “I worked in the NHS for years, but had also done some catering for friends and family. I’d thought about opening a deli or café many times, so I just mentioned that if they ever thought of selling, I’d be interested. I couldn’t believe it when they told me it was on the market. Obviously it was meant to be.”

Spike is now the owner of QOL – aka Quality of Life, local café and deli. It opened in October, providing this blossoming street with a delightfully cosy place to enjoy a good quality, reasonably-priced meal or a cup of coffee – and so much more. “I want it to be the hub of the local community,” Spike explains. And it certainly seems to be already: while we’re chatting, three local business owners pop in for a late lunch. It’s clear that Spike’s friendly and relaxed personality is key to the venture – she chats to her customers about what they’d like, accommodates their requirements. And is Norman Road living up to expectations? “Yes, it’s a wonderful place to be, and so many delightful people living and working around here.”

The menu for soups and specials changes each day. “We’re open for breakfast, lunch, tea and anything in between!” The deli sells a select variety of cheeses (from the Fine Cheese Company), charcuterie from Tuscany, olives, various deli-goodies and ready meals for the freezer – so if you’re late and hungry finishing work, you can take away a home-made supper. There are also unusual pastas, teas, biscuits and chocolates.

Spike of QOL

In the New Year, Spike has plans for ‘public’ dinner parties. “You can come with friends or on your own, and there will be a set menu and price for everyone, who will sit and eat together.” I tell her I think that’s a great idea – what a good way to meet people. But how about a difficult vegetarian diner like me? “We’ll have vegetarian nights!” Spike reassures me. “The evenings will be themed: Burns Night, cheese and wine, vegetarian, fish…” Save me a place at the table, I tell her. I’m looking forward to it already.

You can find QOL at 39 Norman Road,
open 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
